Martin had already produced a slightly oversized guitar with the D-45S Authentic 1936, which was inspired by an instrument from the C.F. Martin Museum Collection. The Super Dreadnought (The Super D) is currently the largest body size in Martin's product line. The Super D has approximately twenty per cent more internal air volume than the standard dreadnought, effectively increasing bass output while maintaining accurate mid and high frequencies. It also features new bracing to maximise tone and volume.
Acoustic testing of the Super D in a controlled environment showed a gain of up to 12 dB compared to a standard dreadnought. The Super D can achieve an extended dynamic range with more volume and with less effort than any other instrument with the C.F. Martin logo. The external appearance is proportional and remains true to the legendary dreadnought shape. The standard scale length and standard depth allow this particular new design to be easily played by artists of all skill levels and in a variety of musical genres.
